The tragic incident took place on Tuesday morning in the Cyumba area, part of the Gicumbi district, a border zone with Uganda. Initial investigations indicate that the children were collecting firewood in a nearby forest when they accidentally found unexploded ordnance. Upon handling the object, it immediately detonated, causing the instantaneous death of the three children, according to the Argentine News Agency.

The danger of war remnants The mayor of the Gicumbi district, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, explained that the device could be a vestige of the armed conflicts that the region went through during the 1990s. This incident once again highlights the latent danger of explosive remnants of war on the African continent, which continue to claim civilian victims decades after the end of hostilities.
